The Alliance for Development and Population Services (ADEPS,
http://www.adeps.or.ke) was established in 2001 in the county of Vihiga, Kenya. The creation of Noah’s Ark Academy in Maragoli is a result of efforts towards the Mission Objective of ADEPS. Their stated main objective is “To build not only a working, but more so, a competent, more healthy, economically stable and focused community, equipped with the necessary tools, skills and knowledge for self-reliance and development leading to full realization of human potentials”.
ADEPS is a non-profit, non-commercial, Community Based Organization (CBO). Mr. Churchill Butalia is the Director/Coordinator. Mr. Butalia is also the Headmaster of the Noah’s Ark Academy, directing the staff and facilitating all of the programs within the school.
Mr. Butalia describes the establishment of Noah’s Ark as a result of ADEPS’ first intervention into the health sector. He comments that the organization continued to encounter many troubled children and youngsters owing to the dreaded HIV/AIDS prevalence in the area as well as other calamities. The following are the primary programs ADEPS is working on to seek improvement in outcomes in the communities they serve.
- Health Care
- Children with troubled background support programs.
- Women Empowerment
- Environmental Protection and improvement
Noah’s Ark Academy Today
Noah’s Ark Academy is a daycare center established in February 2009. This was just at the very critical point when troubled children and the TYSA needs in the area had reached an alarming point. (TYSA reaches out to marginalized youth in the area:). http://tysafrica.org These children had continued to find themselves in a total limbo i.e. without an alternative nor a solution to their problems resulting from their disrupted family structures.
Noah’s Ark Academy was established to address the needs identified in a survey conducted by ADEPS. These children could hardly find the right environment to fit their circumstances in the other normal public learning institutions and therefore hardly get the opportunity to achieve their ambitions in life given their troubled background.
We started off with a total number of 74 children. That number increased at the very first, in that by 2016, the number had increased to 360 children. However, unfortunately hereafter due to a lot of issues, there has been massive school dropout. This reduced the school population to about 100 children currently. The initiation of the Invictus Institute tutoring program has contributed a lot in controlling the school drop out rates. The center runs classes from Baby, Pre-unit., and Grades 1 through 8.
Noah’s Ark first participated in the Kenya certificate of primary education (KCPE) in 2015 presenting a total number of 21 candidates and managed to produce some of the best students in the zone who qualified to join some of the best schools in the region. From here, the school has continued to participate in the national exams every year and her graduates have qualified to join some of the best high school level institutions in the area. The school has also continued to participate in the local exams with outstanding performances.
